Study: EVs ‘Up to Twice as Expensive’ to Run as Gas Cars

One of the big arguments to try to trick people into buying electric vehicles (EVs) is, “Think of how much money you’ll save on gas!” Like everything else about EVs, that is a lie. New figures published in the UK have shown that running an EV can be “up to twice as expensive” as running a gas-powered car.

The mobile app ZapMap has published data showing the reality of what it costs to operate an EV. All the prices published in the data are in British pounds sterling, but this gives us a sense of the comparable costs here in the US.

A typical EV in the UK travels 3.3 miles per kWh expended. This translates to 24.1p per mile to operate an EV. Meanwhile, a diesel-powered vehicle expends energy at 12.5p per mile, and a gas-powered vehicle at 14.5p per mile. Either way, motorists are paying a lot more day-to-day to operate an EV.

Even charging up an EV on a slower public charger works out to 16.4p per mile, which is still more costly than a gas-powered vehicle. Using a rapid or ultra-rapid roadside charger can cause the price of operating an EV to balloon to 80p per mile.

The calculations show that a round-trip between London and Penzance (306 miles) would cost $198.65 (USD) using rapid chargers. The same trip in a diesel-powered vehicle would cost $103.35, and in a gas-powered vehicle, $119.46.

The EV industry has lied to consumers about virtually everything that has to do with EVs. They’ve lied about the actual cost of EVs when government subsidies are not available. They’ve lied about the child slave labor used to source heavy metals in Africa to make EV batteries. They’ve lied about the operating costs of EVs.

The taxpayers should revolt against their governments for trying to force these vehicles on everyone. Our gas-powered cars work just fine.
