Illegal Alien Takes a Sledgehammer to the Iwo Jima Memorial — Media Calls Him a 'Virginia Man'

At 10:13 p.m. on October 22nd, a man walked up to a 9-foot limestone replica of the Iwo Jima memorial at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, raised a sledgehammer, and knocked the head off one of the Marines.

His name is Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano. He's 27 years old. And he's in this country illegally.

The statue sits at the intersection of Richmond Highway and Fuller Road on the Quantico base. It was carved in 1954 by Felix de Weldon — the same sculptor who created the iconic 60-foot Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington. This particular replica is what's known as a "non-heroic-size" version, but it carries the same weight. Marines have walked past it for seventy years.

Soriano was charged with felony destruction of property, trespassing with intent to damage property, and felony injury to a monument. He's being held without bail. The damage estimate runs into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Soriano illegally entered the United States in December 1999. He was granted DACA status in 2014 under the Obama administration. The Biden administration extended it in 2024. The Trump administration declined to renew it, and Soriano lost his DACA status in August 2026.

Two months later, he picked up a sledgehammer and took out his frustrations on a iconic piece of American history. Seems like he might have a lot of respect for American history after all. Perhaps the Trump administration was right about him.

White House Spokeswoman Taylor Rogers didn't mince around the facts. "This criminal illegal alien's dream is over," she said. "Maldonado Soriano disrespected our brave service members and defaced a beautiful monument that honored their sacrifice."

The early press coverage identified Soriano as a "Stafford County man." Technically accurate, in the same way describing a bank robber as "a man wearing shoes" is technically accurate. The immigration status — the part that transforms this from vandalism into a national story — required conservative media outlets like yours truly to drag it into the light. The outlets that led with "Virginia man" knew exactly what they were omitting and why.

Here's what the DACA timeline actually shows. Soriano entered illegally as a child. He was handed protected status. That status was renewed. And the moment the protection expired — the moment the program stopped shielding him from the consequences of being here unlawfully — he committed a felony against a monument honoring the men who fought and died so this country could exist in the first place.

The program's defenders have spent years arguing that DACA recipients are model residents who contribute to their communities. Soriano contributed a sledgehammer to a seventy-year-old limestone Marine.
