Dana Nessel is a progressive Democrat, Michigan's Attorney General, the first openly gay person elected to statewide office in the state's history, and — as of this week — too scared to attend her own party's convention. Not because of Republicans. Not because of protesters. Because of Democrats.
Her crime? Being Jewish.
Nessel told reporters she won't be at the Michigan Democratic Party convention because she's convinced of what will happen if she shows up. "I feel like my presence is not going to be welcomed. I don't want to get chased around. I don't want to get harassed. I don't want to get yelled and screamed at. And I don't want to get booed off the stage, irrespective of what I'm saying. And I believe that if I go, that is what will happen."
That's not a Republican describing a campus protest. That's an elected Democrat describing her own party's reaction to her religious affiliation.
The rot has been spreading since October 7. Michigan Democrats have been hemorrhaging Jewish support as pro-Hamas factions gained influence inside the party apparatus, and the leadership did precisely nothing to push back. It wasn't some fringe problem in a college town — it metastasized into the formal party structure. Today, as Michigan holds its primaries, DSA-backed candidates are testing their strength across the state, running on platforms that make Chuck Schumer look like a Zionist hardliner.
It's gotten so bad that a venue in Grand Rapids — a place called Pux Cider Bar, located next door to Kent County Democratic Party headquarters — actually apologized for hosting an event for sitting U.S. Congresswoman Haley Stevens. A bar apologized for letting a congresswoman hold a Democratic women's event on its premises. Not because of anything Stevens said or did. Because the local activist class decided that any Democrat who hasn't sufficiently denounced Israel doesn't deserve a venue.
That's where the Democratic party is right now. Not debating policy. Not arguing about healthcare or taxes. Deciding which of their own elected officials is allowed to rent a room.
The usual Democratic response to antisemitism allegations is to point to their Jewish members — people like Chuck Schumer, likes, like Nessel Bernie Sanders— as proof the party is welcoming. Except Nessel just told you, on the record, that she's afraid to walk into the room. That's not a talking point from the RNC. That's a confession from inside the house.
And the timing matters. Michigan primaries are today. The DSA wing is pushing hard to prove it can win real elections, not just dominate Twitter threads. If they pull it off, the message to every Jewish Democrat in the state is simple: the party moved on without you. Your votes are welcome, your presence is not.
Nessel checked every box the Democratic Party claims to value. First openly gay statewide officeholder. Progressive prosecutor. Reliable vote on every issue the base cares about.
Apparently none of that matters if you're also Jewish.
