Nancy Pelosi told a room full of political insiders on Tuesday that she only saw Joe Biden "maybe 3 times that whole year" and therefore had no idea his mind was going. This is the same Nancy Pelosi who helped orchestrate his removal from the 2024 presidential race.

Pelosi made the remarks at POLITICO's The California Agenda: Sacramento Summit on August 11, where she reflected on the Biden saga with the casual detachment of someone recounting a movie she barely watched. "I do think that those who did know should have acted upon that information," Pelosi said. "Whoever knew."

Whoever knew. As if that's some unsolvable mystery. As if it wasn't Pelosi herself — along with former President Barack Obama and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer — who privately pressured Biden to drop out after his catastrophic debate performance in June 2024. The three of them didn't push a man off the ticket because of polling numbers alone. They saw what we all saw. They saw it sooner.

Pelosi served as Speaker of the House until January 2023. During that time, she had regular, direct access to Biden — meetings, calls, legislative strategy sessions. The idea that she then went an entire year seeing him only three times while he was running for re-election as the sitting president strains belief past its breaking point.

"When you think of the debate and how sad that was, that's really when we learned," Pelosi added, pinning the discovery of Biden's decline to a single televised event that 50 million Americans watched in real time. The debate didn't reveal anything new. It just made it impossible to hide.

He's right. Everyone did know. The reporters who soft-pedaled questions at press conferences knew. The staffers who scheduled "early lids" before lunch knew. The foreign leaders who watched Biden nearly walk off a cliff in Normandy and wander away from his handlers during the G20 in Brazil — they knew. The only people who claim not to have known are the ones who'd be held responsible for covering it up.

What makes Pelosi's revisionism particularly striking is where she chose to do it. This wasn't an ambush interview. She volunteered these comments at a Sacramento political summit — the same event where she lavished praise on California Governor Gavin Newsom, calling his "strategic thinking" and "knowledge of issues" remarkable and saying he'd "laid a great foundation." That's not a woman reflecting on the past. That's a woman building the stage for 2028 for her chosen candidate.

Pelosi is retiring in January 2027 after nearly 40 years in Congress. She's not running for anything. She doesn't need to lie about what she knew. But the instinct runs deeper than political necessity — if the party ever fully reckons with how a man in obvious cognitive decline was propped up through a presidential term, the fingerprints lead to a very short list of names.
