On Wednesday morning at 2:35 a.m. Eastern, a 4,000-kilogram chunk of SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket — roughly the size of a five-story building — will plow into the lunar surface near Einstein Crater at 5,400 miles per hour. The force of the impact will equal about three tons of TNT.

And the scientists tracking it can barely contain themselves.

The spent upper stage, cataloged by NASA as object 2025-010D, launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base back in January 2025 carrying two privately operated lunar landers, including Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost Mission 2 — which became the first private spacecraft to pull off a fully successful lunar touchdown. The other lander, built by Japan-based ispace, wrecked on arrival. The Falcon 9 upper stage, its job done, got stuck in a kind of orbital limbo between Earth and the Moon, where it's been drifting for 19 months.

NASA's Jimi Russell confirmed the impact timeline, noting that "using publicly available data, independent astronomers were the first to note the upcoming lunar impact." He added, for anyone clutching their pearls: "There is no danger to Earth." NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is being repositioned to photograph the crash site after impact. Scientists expect it to carve a crater between 20 and 30 meters wide.

Brent Garry, a project scientist at NASA's Goddard Flight Center working on the LRO, told NPR: "After the impact we might have a little bit more knowledge of where it is. We can do some additional targeting about a week after the impact." The data will help researchers study lunar subsurface structure and crater formation — the kind of information that costs billions to gather on purpose.

Ben Fernando, a researcher at Los Alamos National Laboratory, encouraged anyone with a telescope to watch. "Given these are so rare, I would encourage people who are interested and aware of the risks to take a look," Fernando said. "This is not something you're going to see with binoculars."

Now here's where it gets interesting beyond the science. The Associated Press reported this crash could have been avoided entirely if SpaceX had nudged the upper stage into a solar orbit after its payload separated. They didn't, and now we've got an unguided building hurtling into the Moon. Some corners of the media are already spinning this as a cautionary tale about "space junk" and Elon Musk's supposed recklessness.

Except the planetary science community is treating this like Christmas morning. Steven A. Hauck, a department chair at Case Western Reserve University, pointed out that observations from impacts like this "improve our understanding of the properties and number of very small asteroids." Impacts on the Moon that scientists can actually observe and measure in real time are extraordinarily rare. This one happens to hit on the sunlit side, near the Moon's northwestern limb, making the ejecta plume potentially visible from Earth.

So a private American company launched a rocket that successfully delivered the first fully successful private lunar lander, and now the spent stage is about to provide free scientific data on lunar geology that NASA would normally spend years and billions planning. Meanwhile, NASA is still working on getting Artemis Base Camp built near Shackleton Crater at the lunar south pole, and China and Russia are collaborating on their own competing moon base.

The growing pace of commercial launches means this kind of event won't stay rare for long. More rockets going up means more spent stages floating around with nowhere to go. Whether that's a crisis or an opportunity probably depends on how much you trust the people building the rockets versus the people writing the regulations.
